Work in the Valley of the Kings.

Welcome to the Luxor Dairies

INSIGHT Expedition to Thebes, Egypt
January, 2002

Team members:  Kevin Cain, Tom Lewis, Philippe Martinez, Jerald Munn, Casondra Sobieralski.

January 3, 2002

This expedition marks our first season of work in the tomb of Ramsses II in the Valley of the Kings, Egypt.  The tomb has been open since antiquity, however it is only now being fully excavated under the supervision of Dr. Christian Leblanc at the CNRS.

During our weeks here in January, we will work on many different documentation projects simultaneously.  At right, Philippe is at work making epigraphic drawings on acetate, right from the wall itself.

We will also be completing laser scanning trials, and a structural survey under the guidance of Tom Lewis, our restoration specialist for this trip.

During our final morning in the tomb, we completed 3D scans of the burial chamber (seen at right and below).  In just a few hours, we had captured the burial chamber with enough fidelity to create an accurate digital reconstruction.
